Orthotic FAQs and Common Questions

If you’re new to custom orthotics and need to know where to start, then start here.

Tailored devices for complex presentations

Bespoke orthoses are the right choice when a patient’s presentation and goals can’t be reliably managed with a generic device – think more complex mechanics, clear asymmetry, a need for specific modifications, constrained footwear, or a history of failed prefabs.

If you find yourself thinking “I’d like this device to reflect this patient’s assessment rather than hoping a standard shape will do,” that’s a strong signal a bespoke prescription will add value.

You don’t need to be highly confident to use this service – you bring your assessment and treatment plan, and we help turn that into a clear prescription with reassurance on the design choices.

For new prescribers, there’s also specific support available around your first 3–5 prescriptions – working through the assessment, proposed prescription, and review plan together before the device is made.

Structured pathways for capacity and return to activity

Rehab is worth considering whenever the goal goes beyond symptom relief and passive load management. In many lower-limb cases, a structured rehab pathway addresses capacity, control, and function – particularly around return to activity – in ways that orthoses alone can’t.

If you find yourself thinking “this patient needs to get stronger, move better, or progress back to activity in a structured way,” a rehab-first approach is likely the right starting point. Orthotic support can still sit alongside this when needed.

A joined-up pathway for load management and recovery

Orthoses and rehab aren’t mutually exclusive – the service is intentionally designed so they can sit within one joined-up pathway when appropriate. Orthoses support load management; rehab addresses adaptation, capacity, and long-term change.

For many clinics, this means you don’t have to choose between “just orthoses” or “just exercises.” You can combine them in a way that reflects how you already think about lower-limb MSK care. Start the prescription and link through to the rehab pathway – both can run in parallel or sequence depending on the case.

Complex cases, first prescriptions, or just unsure where to start

Not every case arrives with a clear route, and that’s fine. Complex feet, multiple previous orthotic failures, significant surgery history, or combined problems – foot and proximal issues together, for example – are exactly the situations where a discussion can help.

You keep ownership of the diagnosis and treatment plan. A conversation can help you think through orthotic strategy, design options, and likely adjustments so you’re not making those decisions in isolation. This also applies if you’re building confidence with prescribing for the first time – the service is set up to support your clinical reasoning, not judge it.

How It Works

MM Podiatry: for clinicians who want to take their patients further than the orthotic, from first presentation to full return to activity

You send us your first case. We review the prescription together, explaining the reasoning before custom orthotic manufacture begins.

Your patient receives their 3D printed custom orthotic. Condition-specific rehab aid bundles — resistance bands, wobble boards, sliders, and more — can be added to any orthotic order and shipped directly to your patient or to your clinic.

You prescribe and monitor lower limb rehabilitation through RehabHub 3D.

When your patient is ready, you direct them to a return-to-activity pathway matched to their goals.

Your patient returns to full, durable function — ready for the demands of their work, sport, and daily life.

Custom orthotics. Digital rehabilitation. Structured return to activity – one joined-up lower limb MSK system.

Each component of the MM Podiatry system, chosen for reliability, consistency and clinical coherence.
